Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
