Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
