An individual who laced sweets with sleeping medication and distributed them to children at a summer camp in the area has admitted sexual offences against two children who were between nine and ten.

The accused was taken into custody after eight children and one adult experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from that region, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at the judicial center on Friday.

Yet, he disputed one particular crime he was facing, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was kept in jail ahead of a further hearing on 28 November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, outlined the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were attending a summer camp which he ran.

The man conducted a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had conducted this practice with the boys "over an extended period", and minors had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She explained the man had been able to explain this repeatedly as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had concerns in recently.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepchild had worries about the activities, with valid cause.

"They chose" to examine in the man's possessions."

The prosecutor stated objects including baby oil, ointment and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson notified the police about his concerns.

She stated the defendant went on to conduct the "sweet game" with six boys that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"The police had not arrived by that time," she added.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was examining law enforcement's management of the situation.

Mrs Prior stated the minors were struggling to walk due to their condition, so the family member contacted the law enforcement a second time.

She stated the man then conducted the "sweet game" in a room of five minors.
